Area of Interest:

Working on genetic resources, crop improvement and biotechnology of black pepper, cardamom, ginger, turmeric and vanilla.
Other main areas of work are micro propagation of spices, in vitro conservation of spices germplasm and exploiting somaclonal variation and in vitro selection for crop improvement in ginger, turmeric, cardamom and vanilla.
The present programme includes development of disease resistant varieties in black pepper using both conventional and biotechnological means, developing microsatellites for pepper and cardamom, finger printing spices germplasm, isolation of resistance genes candidates and developing molecular maps in black pepper for tagging r genes and MAS.

Phytophthora genome decoded
24 Sept, 2011

Kozhikkode: Dr. HP Singh launched the Phytophthora Genome Database developed by IISR. The genome of Phytophthora, the fungus-like organism that causes the dreaded foot rot disease of black pepper, has been completely sequenced for the first time by a group of scientists of Indian Institute of Spices Research, Calicut. “The Phytophthora Genome database will surely help researchers in understanding how the pathogen interacts with the host and how the mechanism will change once the plant is affected by the pathogen, etc.,” said Dr. HP Singh. “The Phytophthora Genome sequencing is a significant achievement of the ICAR network project on Phytophthora, Fusarium and Ralstonia (PhytoFuRa) being operational in seventeen research organizations across the country, including IISR,” said Dr. M Anandaraj, Director, IISR and coordinator of the network project.

According to the researchers, the decoding of the genome will give clues about the regions to be targeted for the successful control of this important plant pathogen. The database will also enable scientists and students to mine the data for getting insights on the biology and genetic makeup of Phytophthora foot rot pathogen and to carry out research in a collaborative manner.

Indian horticulture is the fastest growing: Dr. HP Singh

“Indian horticulture is the fastest growing horticulture sector in the world,” said Dr. HP Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticulture), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. He was talking at the valedictory function of the national training programme on Allele Mining at the Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) here on Saturday. “Despite all the adversities such as decreasing farmland and scarcity of water, we are still able to produce a major share of the food crops to feed our population,” he added. He also pointed out that if the power of information technology and biotechnology is utilized properly, the challenges in the field can be transferred to opportunities.

The national training, sponsored by National Agricultural Innovation Project explore the use of genomic technologies along with genetic and bioinformatics approaches for identifying allelic variations and to dissect trait-gene associations. Dr. Ben Vosman from Wageningen UR Plant Breeding, Netherlands and experts from various ICAR institutes and State Agricultural Universities lead the sessions. Around 14 scientists from various research organizations and academic institutes across the country participated in the programme. Dr. M Anandaraj, Director, IISR welcomed the gathering and Dr. Johnson K George, Course Director, proposed the vote of thanks. Course Coordinators Dr. D Prasath and Dr. S J Eapen also spoke.

Assuming the office as the seventh director of the Institute, he said that priority will be given for identifying and documenting useful agronomic traits of germplasm and establishing alternate centres for germplasm conservation.

“Discovering new molecules and drugs from spices by using the modern sciences of chemi-informatics so as to exploit the nutraceutical and therapeutic values of spices would be another area we are going to explore,” he added.
Making agricultural technologies visible to the farmers by establishing spice parks and encouraging hortitourism would be another area of priority, according to him.

A renowned Plant Pathologist of high caliber, Dr. Anandaraj, is the National Coordinator of the ICAR Outreach Project on Phytophthora, Fusarium and Ralstonia diseases of Horticultural and Field Crops being implemented in 17 ICAR Institutes across the country.

Dr. Anandaraj is succeeding Dr. V A Parthasarathy who has been superannuated as the Director of the Institute last month.

A 1978 batch ASRB recruit, Dr Anandaraj has served the Indian Council of Agricultural Research for more than 32 years under various capacities. He started his career at CPCRI Regional Station, Vittal in Karnataka and later moved to IISR Calicut in the year 1982.

Besides being a recognized PhD research guide of Calicut, Kannur, Mangalore and Nagarjuna Universities, he is also in the Board of Examiners of Calicut University, Kerala Agricultural University and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Dr. Anandaraj is also the President of Indian Society for Spices and fellow of several professional societies. He is well known for his contributions on epidemiology and management of Phytophthora foot rot and his pioneering work on biological control of Phytophthora.
