ICAR-IISR signs MoU with COD and Mr. Martin

ICAR-IISR has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Centre for Overall Development (COD), Thamarassery, Kerala on 9th June 2016 for commercialization of turmeric variety, IISR Alleppey Supreme and ginger variety, IISR Varada . The institute is successful in issuing of its first license for commercialization of black pepper variety “IISR Thevam” to Mr. Martin Manual, Thalayad P.O., Unnikulam, Kozhikode on 10th May 2016.

Market Launch of spices products by M/S Abiruchi Food Products, a unit of Kudumbasree

M/s Abiruchi Food Products, a unit of Kudumbasree, Kozhikode and an incubatee of ICAR-IISR, launched six different spices products, processed and manufactured at the Spice Processing Facility of ICAR- IISR, Peruvannamuzhi during the launch ceremony held at Chakkittappara Grama Panchayat Hall on 16 February 2016.

The products were launched by Dr. M Anandaraj, Director, ICAR-IISR in the presence of Smt. A.C. Sathi, President, Perambra Block Panchayat, Mr. Muhammed Basheer, DMC, Kozhikode, Mr. Sayed Akbar Badhushah Khan, ADMC, Kozhikode and others. About 200 representatives from Kudumbasree and officials from ICAR-IISR participated in the programme.

Launching of ‘SUBICSHA Spice Powders’

Productions of chilli, turmeric and coriander powders have been initiated by SUBICSHA, Coconut Producer Company at the Spice Processing Unit, IISR Farm, Peruvannamuzhi from 8th December 2015. SUBICSHA has 522 women self help groups actively engaged in marketing various food products and has recently joined as an incubatee of the ITM-BPD Unit.

The products launch ceremony of ‘SUBICSHA Spice Powders’ was organized on 1st January 2016 at ICAR-IISR. The product was launched by Mr. V. K. C. Mammed Koya, Hon’ble Mayor, Kozhikode Corporation in presence of Dr. M. Anandaraj, Director, ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode. Mrs. Salini, Corporation Councillor received the products from the Mayor. Mr. M. Kunhammad Master, Chairman and other officials from SUBICSHA and officials of Perambra Block Panchayat felicitated the programme.

Video on spice processing was presented during the programme. The programme was attended by selected progressive farmers from Kerala, consumers, Scientists and staff from IISR and women representatives from SUBICSHA. The programme was immediately followed by display and sale of SUBICSHA spice powders.

Establishment of Agri-Business Incubation (ABI) Centre at ICAR-IISR

ICAR, New Delhi has sanctioned a new project for establishment of “Agri-Business Incubation (ABI) Center” under XIIth Plan Scheme for National Agriculture Innovation Fund (NAIF) at ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode. Under this new project, a total of 79.15 lakh has been sanctioned. ICAR-IISR is planning to establish a Food Processing Facility especially to encourage entrepreneurship development among rural women and youth under this project.

Launching of black pepper micronutrient mixture ‘Paniyoor-S’

The product launch ceremony of black pepper micronutrient mixture ‘Paniyoor-S’ was organized on 11th May 2015 at ICAR-IISR. The product was launched by Dr. M. Anandaraj in presence of Dr Kiran Anegundi, Chairman, M/s Shrey Agritech, Hubli, an authorised licensee of the micronutrient technology. Dr. Kiran made his remarks on the success of this product in black pepper growing regions of Karnataka. The meeting was attended by selected progressive farmers from Kerala, Karnataka and other representatives from both the organizations.

Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights at IISR

Kozhikode: The Institute Technology Management - Business Planning and Development (ITM-BPD) Unit at the Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR), Kozhikode, organized a one day workshop on “Harnessing Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) & its Management for Growth and Prosperity” on Thursday at its campus in Chelavoor.

Dr. V S Ramachandran, Director of Regional Science Centre and Planetarium, Kozhikode inaugurated the workshop. He stressed on the need for safe guarding intellectual property rights, especially in the area of scientific research, for growth and prosperity. The workshop was organized in collaboration with National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), New Delhi. Around 100 participants from research organizations, educational institutes and developmental agencies participated.

IISR Director, Dr. M Anandaraj presided over the function. Mr. N G Lakshminarayan, Manager, NRDC, Bengaluru, briefed about the activities of NRDC. Dr. PS Pravin Raj, Senior Scientist, CSIR-NIIST, Trivandrum, spoke about ‘Indian Patent System’ and Mr. Lawwellman, Associate Professor, National Law College, Kozhikode, made a presentation on ‘Overview of IPR Spectrum in India’.

Mr. T C James, President, National Intellectual Property Organization, New Delhi, spoke about ‘Geographical Indications’ and Dr. Manoj Srivastava, Registrar; PPV&FR Authority, spoke in detail about the ‘Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights in context of Spices Research’.

IISR organizes Entrepreneurship Programme in Spices

Kozhikode: A Business Planning and Development unit can offer a lot to enterprising entrepreneurs to convert their new business ideas to reality,” said Dr. P Sreekantan Thampi, Deputy Director (Publicity), Spices Board, Cochin. “Spice sector offers a lot of business opportunities in areas like organic or pesticide free production, production of quality, disease free and high yielding planting materials, mixed farming etc,” he added.

He was talking at a one day Entrepreneurship Development Programme organized by the Institute Technology Management - Business Planning and Development (ITM-BPD) Units of Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) here on Friday. IISR director Dr. M Anandaraj presided. “The BPD unit at IISR is an attempt to incubate new and innovative ideas of farmers and entrepreneurs in to viable and profitable business,” he said.

Dr. P Rajeev, IISR Senior Scientist, briefed about Institute’s various technologies that are ready for commercialisation and Dr. TE Sheeja, Member Secretary, ITM-BPD Unit, IISR spoke about the incubation facilities available at the Unit for entrepreneurs to start-up, evolve and develop profitable business ventures, once it is ready.

Dr. C Thamban, Principal Scientist, CPCRI; Mr. M Ajith Kumar, Chief Manager, Agri Business, Federal Bank, Kozhikode and Mr. KP Padmakumar, District Development Manager, NABARD Malappuram also spoke. Dr. T John Zachariah welcomed the gathering and Dr. Santhosh J Eapen proposed the vote of thanks.

More than hundred people including spice researchers, entrepreneurs, progressive farmers, representatives of farmers’ clubs, self help groups and developmental agencies participated in the programme.
